shopping local for the holidays!

Take the Pledge
As you do your holiday shopping this year, take a pledge to do at least 50% of your shopping in locally-owned independent stores. It will make a huge difference! Last year, with people focused on shopping locally, the 4th quarter sales tax revenue in Geneva increased 10.7% from the previous year. In real terms, that meant shopping in Geneva helped generate an increase of $75K+ in sales tax revenue and meant that local businesses collectively made more than 10% in revenue during the final quarter of 2014 than the year before. That meant more money for local businesses, more money for local development projects, more money for local infrastructures, more money for community programs.
So let’s do it again this year and make 2015 the year you shop locally for the holidays! There are lots of reasons to shop locally in Geneva. Here are some basic economic figures:
  • For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $73 remains in the local economy, and $27 leaves.
  • For every $100 spent at a non-locally owned business, $57 leaves and only $43 remains in the local economy.
  • When you shop locally owned businesses, your money is recirculated over and over and creates up to 75% more tax revenue to your community and state.
  • For every two jobs national retailers bring to a community, three jobs are lost as a result of local businesses closing down.
  • Locally-owned businesses support local community projects and charities to a far higher degree than non-local businesses. How much more? Studies show that non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from small, local business owners than they do from large businesses.

Shopping local strengthens Geneva and benefits us all.

Return of the Love Geneva Cash Mob!

Here is yet another thing we love about Geneva: in an era when large grocery store chains have driven out most of the small, independent groceries and markets that used to be the backbone of most small American towns, Geneva has seen TWO small, independent grocery stores open up on Castle Street. Talk about bucking a trend!! If you don’t know, we talking about:

La Reyna de Mexico, the small Mexican grocery/bodega at 20 Castle Street. Specializing in Mexican groceries, with a small restaurant in the back that is phenomenal (seriously), La Reyna is a secret jewel in the middle of Geneva.

Madia’s Italian Market on 68 Castle Street. Specializing in imported Italian goods, with a deli and butcher, this is next generation of the Madia’s Grocery store that closed earlier in the year. Reinvented with a more focused selection, Madia’s continues to be the best butcher shop in Geneva!

La Reyna and Madia’s join El Morro and Momberger’s as Geneva’s small, independent markets.

So we’re announcing the return of the LOVE GENEVA CASH MOB for this Saturday, June 6th! Help spread some local love on Saturday by stopping into La Reyna and/or Madia’s to see what they have going on and spend a little money to help keep local businesses thriving in Geneva! We’re hoping people can make it down to both between 11 am – 1 pm on Saturday, but if you can make it anytime that day, the love will be appreciated.

What is a CASH MOB? When members of the community come out to support selected businesses by spending a little money, making a cumulative impact on that business. Even spending as little as $5 will make a big impact. So come on out and show some love for Geneva’s locally-owned independent businesses!

Evidence that shopping local is making Geneva stronger.

Want some evidence that what you do is important? Proof that shopping local matters? As you know, LOVE GENEVA asked people to take a pledge to do at least 50% of their holiday shopping locally. You know what? The 4th quarter sales tax revenue in Geneva increased 10.7% in 2014 compared to 2013. In real terms, that means shopping in Geneva generate $75K+ in sales tax revenue more this year than last. That is sales tax revenue, which means that local businesses collectively made more than 10% in revenue during the final quarter of last year than the year before. That is more money for local businesses, more money for local development projects, more money for local infrastructures, more money for community programs. You know who did that? YOU DID!!! Keep loving Geneva. Keep shopping local.
